As a member of Doula UK, I am expected to maintain Continuing Professional Development.

Doula (pronounced "doola") is a Greek word meaning "woman servant or caregiver". It now refers to an experienced woman who offers emotional and practical support to a woman (or couple) before, during and after childbirth. Birth Doulas are trained and experienced in childbirth. They have good knowledge and awareness of female and birth physiology. During pregnancy women need positive encouragement and support. They must also feel able to make decisions for themselves and their babies based on information gained during the pregnancy. As a former nurse midwife I feel I am able to offer a comprehensive range of information.

I believe that the antenatal period is extremely important and I help to find what is right for women and their partners through exploration and education. We explore many aspects of care including complimentary therapies but the choices made by my clients are entirely their own. The Doula is employed by the woman or couple before, during and after a woman gives birth to a baby. The Doula's role is a non-medical one but she offers both counselling and support.

Birth is a sacred and intimate event, a rite of passage. This can be brought into the birth plan. The Doula will strive to enable the couple to have the experience that they seek.

My background gives me a holistic view of care of pregnant women, the potentials and pitfalls of labour and birth and alternatives available during care. I trained with Paramana Doula in 2007.This program is run by Lilianna Lammers and Dr Michel Odent, a leading and world renowned advocate of choice in childbirth for women. Having studied some of Dr Odentís books and having attended a workshop of his whilst I was living and working in the USA, I felt that this course was the right one for me. His research-based practice and writings are inspirational and appeal to my nursing background. Lilianna is a wonderful teacher; her knowledge, sensitivity and compassion were wonderful guidelines for my own practice.
